Europa League: Hardly The AIA Cup

Just thought I would jump in on all this Brendan Rodgers chat. In my opinion, a manager's ability to spot and sign the right player is the most important part of their skill set and is a hugely underrated quality. You can work all week on the training ground, but if the players aren't good enough you will come unstuck. There is no doubt in my mind that Brendan is a very good coach. The work he did with the Chelsea youth side was exceptional and his work at Liverpool has generally been good; for a while it was incredible, and occasionally it's very poor. Liverpool are the fifth biggest club in England; finishing above that is a fine achievement given the resources of the clubs above them. However, his ability to spot a player is nowhere near at the level it should be to compete consistently with the top managers. It is far too easy in modern football to spend mind boggling money on average footballers. Wenger always talks about money not being a good indication of quality and he, above everyone else, has proven that you can build a Champions League football team on small amounts of cash if you have the right eye. The greatest managers in the world, despite making mistakes, are all fairly gifted in this area. With that in mind here is a little game for the mailbox. Create the best team you can with £20million from previous transfers. Academy graduates can be included as there is skill in bringing through young players although they have to have given the player their debut. Also, no transfers before 2000 simply to avoid the class of 92 which was bloody 22 years ago! As an Arsenal fan I scupper myself slightly and missed out on using Vieira, Ljungberg, Anelka, Overmars, Petit, but I still came up with this lot: Lehmann, Bellerin, Toure, Campbell, Gibbs, Song, Fabregas, Wilshere, Ramsey, Pires, Van Persie Not a bad side and you can keep the change. Eleven players for a combined total of £13 million and I have a feeling this lot would get you a title or two. A waste of money 11 might be a good shout as well; wouldn't mind seeing a few of them to name and shame some poor decision makers. Tom Goldenballs

Can We Combine Danny And Theo? The finishing of Theo Walcott and the hold-up play of Danny Welbeck would be just perfect. Plus, lots of Brendan Rodgers, some Big Sam and all hail Degsy...

Brendan Rodgers is an embarrassment. He is an embarrassment both on and off the field. For the umpteenth time in his short managerial life he proudly played himself up just before the inevitable almighty fall. His '150 percent certain to remain manager next season' was typically succeeded by a 6-1 hammering at the hands of Stoke. To be abundantly clear, this was the worst defeat for Liverpool since 1963. Also disgraceful was how he approached the match vs Real Madrid earlier in the season - basically giving up before even taking to the field at the Bernabeu. Liverpool fans remember going into major stadiums with the confidence of winning or fighting for a draw but Rodgers has sucked that out of us. We remember Rafa's teams winning against plenty of the continental heavyweights and if not winning, running them bloody close. But more than anything else, for the first time in many a season there seem to be two realistic, brilliant candidates available to us. Rafa has proven himself all over again (with Chelsea and Napoli) and clearly loves Liverpool Football Club. Jurgen Klopp is a genius manager who can take Liverpool back amongst the elite. Both men bring tons of experience, silverware, tactical nous and the ability to attract top-level players from across the world. It would be a major mistake on the part of FSG if they were to let go of this opportunity. RV, India Sterling And Rodgers: Both Flawed It has been so easy to finish fourth this season. In a way, looking back on the league before the fixture with Chelsea last season and where Liverpool were, one might be forgiven for thinking it would have been quite easy to win the title too. I feel similar feelings about both Raheem Sterling and Brendan Rodgers in truth; both have shown flashes of extreme brilliance but too often, when it has mattered most, both have gone missing. In Raheem's case, even factoring in the 25% sell-on for QPR, we could potentially cash in on a player who is good and might become great but so far hasn't shown enough to me to warrant the reputation he seems to have gained. Having watched him in almost 40 games this season my overarching feelings are that he is either a forward that doesn't score enough, a winger with a poor final ball or an attacking midfielder that doesn't always have the required finesse to play through the middle. I'm not saying he's not good, he's way above average, I'm just saying he's not great and I don't think he's a £40m player at the moment, but that's not to say he won't become one. In Rodgers' case, he took us close to the title and he took us back to the Champions League, but once he got into those positions he didn't quite know what to do with himself or the team. If I was to compare Rodgers to another manager tactically it would have to be Wenger. He has a view on how football should be played and doesn't bend away from that at all. I know Wenger did alter his style against Man City this season but that seemed to be an anomaly now we are in a position to reflect. The problem with this mentality is that when you come up against teams with better players, you invariably will lose because they will exploit your mistakes. We saw this against Arsenal, Chelsea (when it mattered) and Man Utd in the second half of the season. Managers that can't change their approach for different games don't work at clubs like Liverpool, where there are four better squads in the league every season at least. Last season was the exception because we had the third best player in the world - we conceded 50 goals but he bailed us out on many a day.

Van Praag out of FIFA race Michael van Praag has withdrawn from the race to become FIFA president and thrown his support behind Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan.

Van Praag was one of three candidates bidding to take on incumbent Sepp Blatter, who is bidding for a fifth term in charge of football's world governing body. The Dutchman's withdrawal leaves Prince Ali and Portugal great Luis Figo as the only remaining challengers for Blatter's job. Blatter is strong favourite to add to his 17 years in charge of FIFA when the 209 national federations vote next week. "After thorough deliberation and reflection with different involved parties and stakeholders, Michael van Praag decided to withdraw his candidacy to become the next FIFA president and to join forces with presidential candidate Prince Ali bin al Hussein," read a statement from van Praag's team.

Don't Underestimate Leicester's Great Escape They may not have secured survival on the last day or beaten a Premier League giant on the way, but don't underestimate Leicester's incredible achievement...

An exceptional product or achievement, or an outstanding example of something.' You'll struggle to find a more apt description of Leicester securing Premier League survival than the above definition of a 'miracle'. In footballing terms, the Foxes were doomed by Christmas. Less than five months on and they have stayed up with relative ease, leaving three teams battling the drop and two already down. But it's that relative ease which threatens to take away from the overall achievement. The only other sides to avoid relegation after being bottom on Christmas Day are West Brom in 2004/05 and Sunderland last season. Both were branded 'Great Escapes' by many, but not so with Leicester's salvo. Such an exceptional achievement shouldn't be ignored simply because it wasn't secured dramatically on the final day; it should be lauded because of the comfort with which it was eventually attained. After a stunning start to the season including wins over Manchester United and Stoke, a hard-fought draw with Arsenal and plucky defeat to Chelsea, Leicester's fortune appeared to run out by the end of September. Symptomatic of the growing gap between the Premier League and the Championship, the Foxes struggled alongside Burnley and QPR. A defeat to the latter left Nigel Pearson's men rock bottom, a position they would not vacate until mid-April. It's credit to Pearson that he never lost belief. After yet another battling performance in yet another defeat, this time to Arsenal, the 51-year-old responded: "We work as hard as we can to alter our fortunes. I'm confident and have the belief in everybody associated with the club that we can do that." It was that 2-1 defeat to Arsenal which could be pinpointed as the turnaround in Leicester's season. A run of just three wins in 21 saw Pearson revert to a formation with five in defence. Facilitated by perhaps the best signing of the January transfer window in loanee Robert Huth, the switch gave his side more solidity, as well as the perfect platform from which to counter-attack and for Esteban Cambiasso to help dominate the midfield. Whether it was because it was Pearson or because it was Leicester, the change received little fanfare, certainly compared to Brendan Rodgers' move to accommodate three centre-backs at Liverpool. While the Reds went on an excellent run before stumbling, Leicester simply haven't looked back since. Let's not forget what a brave decision it was. Pearson's first big Premier League chance appeared to be doomed before it had even started. Trusting the players who had won him the Championship the season before, little was invested in the squad. Known for his belligerent and sometimes arrogant nature, Pearson was tasked with scrapping a trusted system to save the club's Premier League status. Not exactly known for his tactical nous, he did exactly that.

The Great Joy Of Fred, Nathan and Argel Fucks There is something deeply wonderful about a Brazilian called Nathan, Fred or Tim. That's only matched by Creedance Clearwater Couto and Robert Kenedy...

Remember when important things weren't announced via social media? Weird that, isn't it? In the past people might go on the radio, or write a newspaper article, or if they'd done something particularly rum then they'd hold a very stiff press conference in front of their house, family at their side, the wife with the furious eyes and rictus grin of someone who knew they wouldn't have to share the marital bed for a while, the kids looking baffled in their Sunday best. Even our government seems to be limited to 140 characters. This week David Cameron (or whichever dead-eyed drone runs his account) has been announcing Cabinet posts via Twitter, letting the public know that someone who voted against gay marriage would be equalities minister, a man who favours the reintroduction of hanging is the new Justice Secretary and a shadowy figure with a bucket full of water and a grim expression is the minister for not drowning unwanted puppies. Something else confirmed on the all-powerful social media this week was the transfer of Brazilian midfielder Nathan to Chelsea, after he posted a picture of himself with Willian on Instagram. Nathan is supposed to be quite good, but forget all that for a minute and just concentrate on the name. Nathan, after all, is the name of that kid at school who told outrageous lies like he lived in America but swam in every day or that his 5ft 5, 18 stone dad was in the SAS, not that of a tricksy Brazilian creative midfielder. But names have always been half the joy of Brazilian football, as well as, y'know, the football. Nathan continues the fine tradition of the Brazilian footballer with the banal Anglicised name. You will be familiar with Fred, and there's also of course Jo, Alan and Bernard, plus a wide selection of other similar names that you might find in a Staffordshire local council office. Botafogo have a striker named Bill, right-back Tony is currently on loan at Bahia from Gremio, midfielder Jonathan used to represent Vasco de Gama while striker Tim played 16 times for Brazil in the 1930s and 40s. It's only a matter of time before we see a doughty midfielder called Clive, or a flighty winger that goes by the name Kevin. Some of those names have pretty straightforward explanations (Fred is short for Frederico, Jo short for Joao etc), but others are either named or nicknamed after a range of curious and esoteric figures. Nicknames are of course a big thing, with some of the greatest players in history known not by what's written on their birth certificates, but by monikers they've picked up along the way. Garrincha means 'little bird', while nobody quite knows how Edson Arantes do Nascimento became Pelé, who was known as Dico by his family when he was younger, and was called Gasolina after arriving at Santos. One theory is that his favourite player as a young lad was a goalkeeper called Bilé, which he couldn't pronounce properly, so Pelé it was. The nicknames can get quite silly, too. The 1930 World Cup team had a player called Preguinho, which means 'Little Nail', a player called Manteiga, meaning butter, was so named because his passing was slick, while World Cup-winning captain and current national coach Carlos Caetano Bledorn Verri became Dunga in his diminutive youth because that means 'Dopey' in some translations of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. And then of course there's Hulk, or Givanildo Vieira de Sousa to his mum, who picked up his alternative moniker because of an apparent likeness to Lou Ferrigno. And don't forget Carlos Adriano Sousa Cruz, who became Michael Jackson after he developed an elaborate dancing goal celebration. Not for any other, more unpleasant reasons.

Wigan Athletic: The Club That Lost Its Way Wigan went from everyone's second favourite team to their least favourite. Racism, sexism, homophobia, two relegations and a club left as a shell. Where did it all go wrong?

It is May 4, 2013, and Wigan have just won 3-2 at eighth-placed West Brom. Second-half goals from James McArthur and Callum McManaman have given Roberto Martinez's side a further boost in their fight for Premier League survival, a week after the home draw with Tottenham. Win their game in hand at home to Swansea in four days' time, and Wigan will leapfrog Newcastle, Norwich and Sunderland, moving up to 15th. That would put them a point behind Southampton. The following weekend, Wigan beat Manchester City at Wembley. Wimbledon's victory over Liverpool in 1988 is credited as the ultimate FA Cup final upset, but Bobby Gould's Crazy Gang were seventh in Division One at the time. Wigan's achievement was just as unexpected, if not more so. Wigan Athletic had peaked. A club that had only once previously reached the quarter-final stage had won the Cup. Eight years after earning promotion to the top flight for the first time in their history, a little club from a rugby town had taken on football's elite, and they had won. It may sound like sugary sentiment in hindsight, but at the time the cliché was apt: David really had beaten Goliath. Against typical protocol, Wigan were led out by their chairman at Wembley. "The FA have given permission for the chairman to lead us out and we are all delighted," Roberto Martinez told journalists two days before the final. The story of Dave Whelan's broken leg has now become a running joke given its constant retelling, but once existed as an intriguing anecdote. This was a 76-year-old man laying ghosts to rest. Two days short of two years after that Hawthorns win, Wigan lost 3-0 at Brentford's Griffin Park to confirm their relegation back to the third tier. They had taken five points from their final nine matches, sleep-walking their way to the drop. The ten-year sojourn was over. There was an implausibility to Wigan's continued Premier League status, unlikely survival following unlikely survival. Their reversion to the mean of the small-town lower league club was not startling in itself, but the manner of their fall has been astonishing. That Wigan have managed to drop back into the third tier without anyone offering them a shred of sympathy is a tribute to their abhorrent decision-making of the last 12 months. The Latics have transformed from everybody's second team to one of the least liked clubs in the country. If the Premier League missed them, the Championship will not. It is worth mentioning that Wigan's first season in the Championship was far from a disaster, despite the club's decision to replace Roberto Martinez with Owen Coyle. It's the equivalent of moving from white wine to Ouzo, a swift punch to the face that's difficult to swallow. Coyle's brand of back-to-basics football lasted 16 league matches. Uwe Rosler then offered genuine hope of almost instant redemption for Wigan. He took 40 points from his first 54 available, leading Wigan into the play-offs. He also managed them to another victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup, eventually losing to Arsenal on penalties in the semi-final. Wigan fell to QPR in the play-offs, Rosler's players shattered after a 62-game season. Captain Emmerson Boyce, aged 34, played 57 matches that campaign. That deserves a bloody medal. Wigan's problems clicked into gear last summer. Having sold James McArthur, Jordi Gomez, Jean Beausejour and loaned out Grant Holt, Ali Al-Habsi and Juan Carlos Garcia, Rosler spent more than £10m on Oriol Riera, Andy Delort, Emr Huws (initially on loan) and Adam Forshaw. The latter of those was sold to Middlesbrough in January, whilst the first three have started 25 league games between them. Delort, top scorer in France's Ligue 2 last season, is still to score in England. He cost £3m. Rosler was sacked in November with Wigan in 22nd in the Championship. The German expressed his surprise the news, pointing out that Wigan were just five points from mid-table. Bimingham City, who finished the season in 10th, were level on points with Rosler's side when he was sacked. It was Whelan's decision to replace Rosler with Malky Mackay that truly brought the circus to town. Mackay's appointment at Crystal Palace three months earlier had fallen through after the publication of sexist, racist and homophobic text messages, and he remained the subject of a Football Association investigation. Mackay had used the now infamous "It was just banter," defence, a weak fascia for some deeply unpleasant behaviour. Whelan was unmoved. "He is the man to lead us back into the Premier League. He has led a team out of the Championship before and he knows this league inside out having played and managed in it," Whelan stated. "His achievements at Cardiff City were magnificent and we need a strong leader who will command the respect of a very experienced and talented dressing room. "Malky made a mistake, he knows that, we know that and we have discussed this issue at length face to face. He has paid for what he did in terms of the bad publicity he has received since and will no doubt continue to suffer in the future. Contrary to the way he has been portrayed in recent months, the Malky Mackay I met this week, and who has been vouched for by the many different people from whom we have sought advice before making this appointment, is an honourable man."

The Page That's Never Sure Why It Needs You The Daily Express have ten (or five) things for Brendan Rodgers to do, because Liverpool need to make more quick fouls. It worked out so well for Steven Gerrard...

As is the fashion at this stage of the season, the Daily Express website (courtesy of Paul Joyce) takes the opportunity to list exactly where Liverpool have gone wrong. To say this is an exhaustive list would be an understatement. 'ANFIELD UNCOVERED: The 10 things Brendan Rodgers must do to revive Liverpool,' reads the headline. No. 10 on the list (Joyce was presumably flagging at this point) tells Fenway Sports Group to consider its model of ownership. We're not sure this is in Brendan Rodgers' remit. So, Brendan must: Increase the squad's physical and mental strength, add more experience, strengthen the spine, get a new goalkeeper, add more goals, win more big games, sell unreliable and unwanted players, find the right formation and persuade club legends to become coaches. Mediawatch suggests that everyone cut out and keep that above paragraph, because it basically contains a list of how almost every club in the world could improve. Bizarrely, by the time Joyce's piece hits the paper it's been reduced to 'Five goals for a new Liverpool'. "We liked your list Paul, but..."

Swindon 5-5 Sheffield Utd (agg 7-6) - watch highlights of the 10-goal epic

Swindon and Sheffield United played out a 10-goal thriller in the second leg of their League One play-off semi-final. Swindon reached the final at Wembley after a thrilling 5-5 draw with the Blades saw them go through 7-6 on aggregate. Watch all 10 goals from the incredible match at the County Ground by playing the highlights video above.Cooper said his father - the former Leeds United and England defender Terry - who was at the game had "never seen anything like it". "I've got the biggest headache, I'm pleased and delighted," added Cooper. "It's the most ridiculous game of football you will ever see, brilliant goals, rubbish defending. It was incredible." After a day of reflection, Cooper's attention will then turn to the final at Wembley - a stadium where he has previously experienced victory in the FA Trophy while in charge of Darlington. "Been there once and won once so I'm hoping that carries on," he said. "It comes down to one game and we've done remarkably well to get there. I'm sure (Preston manager) Simon Grayson was rubbing his hands together watching it and with the firepower at their disposal I'm sure they'll fancy their chances, but on the Wembley surface we have a chance."

Thierry Henry: Tottenham failing to make step up to top four

Tottenham Hotspur are failing to make the step up into top four contenders in the Premier League, says Thierry Henry. The 1-0 defeat by Manchester City on Sunday means Mauricio Pochettino's side will finish with less points this term than last year's 69, and also puts them seven points off fourth place with three games remaining. Having finished fifth and sixth in the last two seasons after finishing the 2011/12 season in fourth place, Henry admits that although the club is well run, they are struggling to find the formula for progress. Stoke v Tottenham Stoke 9/5 Draw 12/5 Tottenham 7/5 Football Betting Bet £5 Get £20 Free Thierry Henry praised Man City's playmaker David Silva for his performance and in particular the desire he showed during their 1-0 win against Tottenham 1 Thierry Henry praised Man City's playmaker David Silva for his performance and in particular the desire he showed during their 1-0 win against Tottenham He said on Super Sunday: "There is something with Spurs that is difficult to put your finger on. It's a well-run club. "They buy a lot of players, they sell a lot, and yet they still finish sixth in the league. They can't make the step. "I think they did a great job of bringing some youngsters in - Mason, Bentaleb, Kane - but at one point something has to kick in, something has to be done. You can't always be fifth, or sixth team in this league. "They have an amazing training ground, everything is there for them to make that step. But they are not making it."

Pep Guardiola: Barcelona's Lionel Messi is impossible to stop

Barcelona's Lionel Messi is "too good" and impossible to stop, according to Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola. Bayern and Barca meet at the Nou Camp in Wednesday's Champions League semi-final first leg, with Guardiola back at the Spanish club for the first time since leaving in 2012. "There is not a system or coach to stop talent of Messi's magnitude," he said. "The way he has been playing over the past four or five months, you cannot stop him. He is too good." Messi, 27, scored twice in Barca's 8-0 win over Getafe on Saturday to reach 51 goals for the season, and in November became the Spanish league's all-time top scorer. Pep Guardiola Bayern's match at Barca on Wednesday will be Guardiola's first at the Nou Camp since leaving in 2012 Guardiola spent four years as Barca manager from 2008, winning three league titles, two Champions Leagues and two Club World Cups. The 44-year-old also played for the club for 11 years between 1990 and 2001. "Barca is a very important part of my life," he added. "Until now it was everything but I am here to win. I am not here for a homage but to see Bayern through to the final." Messi, who will make his 100th European appearance in Wednesday's match, said of Guardiola: "He was with us for a long time and we had the luck to win many titles and experience important moments. He is a coach that studies everything. "It is the same for both sides. Pep knows us very well and we know what he asks of his players. It is 50-50, we both know each other very well." Messi also Barca had been "hurt" by their 7-0 aggregate defeat by Bayern in the Champions League semi-finals of 2013. "That hurt a lot, but a lot of time has passed," said the Argentina forward. "We come into the game differently, as do they, and it will be a different tie to that one."

Arsenal reportedly a target for Africa's richest man Aliko Dangote

Africa's richest man Aliko Dangote, who has an estimated fortune of £10bn, is reportedly keen to buy Arsenal.
The Nigerian has been keen to take control of the Gunners for a number of years and was linked with a stake in the club when former director Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith was selling her shares in 2010.
Majority shareholder Stan Kroenke remains committed to Arsenal for the long-term while Uzbek magnate Alisher Usmanov, who controls around 30 per cent of the club, has also expressed no desire in selling any of his stock.

But Dangote, whose business interests include sugar, flour and oil, is refusing to rule out taking charge of the Londoners in the future.
Speaking to Bloomberg, he said: "I still hope, one day at the right price, that I will buy the team. I might buy it, not at a ridiculous price but a price that the owners won't want to resist. I know my strategy."
However, the 58-year-old was quick to point out that, despite the interest, no bid for the Premier League side 'is in the pipeline'.
"We have 16 billion dollars-worth of investments in the next few years," he added. "Right now I want to take my own business to a certain level. Once I finish on that trajectory, then maybe."
Arsenal, who beat Hull 3-1 on Monday to give themselves a good chance of finishing second to Chelsea, will face Aston Villa in the FA Cup final at Wembley on May 30.

Dangote, however, suggested Emirates boss Arsene Wenger's side should be achieving more.
"Wenger needs to change his style a bit," he said. "They need new direction."

Newcastle stand by John Carver following latest defeat

Newcastle United have issued a statement confirming John Carver will remain in charge as the club fights to stave off the threat of relegation. A run of eight straight defeats, the latest a 3-0 reverse at Leicester City on Saturday, has left the Magpies just two points above the relegation places and brought Carver’s future into sharp focus. Reports over the weekend suggested Derby County manager Steve McClaren may have been parachuted in for the final weeks of the campaign, but United have elected not to rock the boat. Newcastle v West Brom Newcastle 9/5 Draw 9/4 West Brom 6/4 Football Betting Bet £5 Get £20 Free A club statement read: “Following the result at Leicester City on Saturday, there has been two days of frank dialogue with John Carver and senior players. “The outcome of those discussions is that the board, John Carver, his staff and players are absolutely focused on our current situation and the three hugely-important fixtures that remain this season, two of which are at St James' Park. “All parties accept responsibility for the current situation but are determined, together, to ensure this club - your club - retains its Premier League status. That is the only focus at this time.”

Bristol City: Steve Cotterill on how to build a title-winning team

The League One title, the Football League Trophy, an FA Cup run and more than 100 goals in all competitions. Bristol City's season reads like the CV of a Football Manager aficionado. But, having taken over with the club 23rd in League One and in danger of suffering successive relegations, boss Steve Cotterill has transformed the fortunes of the Robins in the small space of 16 months. In ending City's 60-year wait for a league championship, the 50-year-old also achieved that feat for the third time in his own career. But how exactly do you build a team fit to win a title? Find a formation that suits Steve Cotterill Steve Cotterill spent time on Harry Redknapp's coaching staff at QPR after leaving Nottingham Forest Following the World Cup in Brazil, pundits, managers and supporters alike were eulogising over the return of wing-backs and the 3-5-2 system. BBC Sport's Phil Neville even described it as "fashionable", if such a phrase can be attached to a football team's formation. However, while Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal tried and promptly ditched it, Cotterill has utilised that style of play to spectacular effect. "We were already playing the 3-5-2 at the end of last season, so it's a formation I'd been looking at for a little while," Cotterill told BBC Sport. "But what I needed to do was make it better than the season before. "And, while other formations can sometimes give you a problem, our formation can give other teams a problem. We've managed to do very well with it - and we've improved on it throughout the season too." Sign players to fit the way you play Luke Freeman Cotterill brought in seven players during the summer, including four who were out of contract or had been released by their previous clubs. Of those for whom the Robins paid a fee, no penny appears to have been better spent than the ones used to sign Luke Freeman. The youngest-ever player to feature in the FA Cup proper while at Gillingham, the left-winger caught many an eye playing for Stevenage last year. He has done the same this season - but not as a left-winger. "I always felt he could play as the one in front of a [midfield] two," said Cotterill. "You just needed to make sure he was going to work hard enough to get back and he's managed to do that. "His running stats are up there every week and we're as delighted with that as we are his great feet in and around the final third. "For his first season playing in that role, he's been brilliant."

Williamson: John Carver says defender 'got sent off on purpose'

Newcastle United manager John Carver thinks his defender Mike Williamson was sent off on purpose as an "easy way out" in their 3-0 defeat by Leicester. The centre-back was shown a second yellow for barging Jamie Vardy when the pair were off the pitch, while Daryl Janmaat was also sent off later on. "I thought he'd done that on purpose - it looks like he did," Carver said. "The ball was off the pitch - he had no need to make the challenge. He will miss two games. Is it an easy way out?" Carver had not calmed down by the time of the post-match news conference. "I thought he meant it. When the ball went on to that left-hand side my first reaction was don't do it. He did it. Vardy was off the pitch, Willo was off the pitch, the ball was off the pitch. There was no need to do it and I'm not accepting that. "I told him that to his face. I don't want to go into his reaction." Carver was furious with his side and in honest post-match interviews said: "On a scale of one to 10, it is a minus 10." "I asked if everyone understood their roles and responsibilities. I can't go and mark men on the pitch myself." "If we're not willing to compete, get your head onto the ball and risk getting an injury, you won't get anywhere." "We'll have an open discussion on Monday - it'll be interesting." "There might have been players who didn't try - maybe they don't think they'll get a new contract or be here next year. But they're getting paid and should try." BBC pundit Martin Keown said Carver "is taking players apart" and he should be supportive publicly. Robbie Savage said it was "one of the worst sides I have ever seen in the Premier League".
